Larry Murphy is a former NHL defenseman who played from 1980-2001 with the Los Angeles Kings (1980-1984), Washington Capitals (1984-1989), Minnesota North Stars (1988-1991), Pittsburgh Penguins (1991-1995), Toronto Maple Leafs (1995-1997) and Detroit Red Wings (1996-2001). A 2004 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Murphy won four Stanley Cups in his career and was named to the 1994, 1996 and 1999 All-Star games. He also was named to three Second All-Star Teams (1987, 1993 and 1995).

In 1991 and 1992, Murphy helped Pittsburgh win back-to-back Stanley Cups. He posted a then-career-high 77 points (23 goals and 56 assists) during the Penguins’ second championship, and the following year in 1992-1993, Murphy set a new career-high with 85 points. Murphy would again win back-to-back Stanley Cups before his career was finished, helping the Red Wings repeat as champions in 1997 and 1998. In the Red Wings’ 1997-1998 title run, he played in all 82 regular season games, scoring 11 goals with 42 assists.

Murphy is ranked in the top five all-time in league history for scoring among defenseman, trailing only Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque, Phil Housley and Al MacInnis. After retiring, he worked as a broadcaster for the Red Wings on Fox Sports Detroit.
