Maurice Cheeks is a former NBA point guard who played from 1978-1993, primarily with the Philadelphia 76ers (1978-1989) and later the San Antonio Spurs (1989-1990), New York Knicks (1990-1991), Atlanta Hawks (1991-1992) and New Jersey Nets (1993). Cheeks was a four-time All-Star (1983, 1986-1988) and was named to the NBA All-Defensive First-Team four times (1983-1986). In his 16-year career, he posted per game averages of 11.1 points and 6.7 assists. Cheeks is a 2018 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and his jersey #10 was retired by the 76ers.

In 1983, he averaged 12.5 points and 6.9 assists per game for Philadelphia in route to earning All-Star and All-Defensive First-Team accolades and helping the 76ers to an NBA title. The 1985-1986 campaign saw Cheeks set a career-best in assists per game with 9.2 while the following season, his 15.6 points per game also set a career-best mark. After his playing days, Cheeks served as head coach for the Portland Trail Blazers (2001-2005) and the 76ers (2005-2009). In 2015, he joined the coaching staff of the Oklahoma City Thunder as an assistant. Cheeks was born on September 8, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois and played college basketball at West Texas A&M prior to being a 2nd round pick by the 76ers the 1978 NBA draft.
