Pat LaFontaine played center in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1983-1998 with the New York Islanders (1983-1991), Buffalo Sabres (1991-1997) and New York Rangers (1997-1998). A 2003 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame and U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, LaFontaine is similarly a member of both the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame. As part of the NHL’s 100th Anniversary celebration, LaFontaine was recognized in 2017 among the 100 Greatest NHL Players of all-time. LaFontaine was named to the NHL All-Star Game five times in his career, including four consecutive seasons between 1988-1991.

During the 1989-1990 season, LaFontaine set then-career-highs in goals (54), assists (51) and points (105). Three years later in 1992-1993 as a member of the Sabres, LaFontaine produced a monster season of 148 points, including 95 assists, both of which were career-bests. His jersey #16 was retired by Buffalo in 2006. In 1995, LaFontaine won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, honoring his sportsmanship, perseverance and dedication to the game of hockey. In international play, LaFontaine represented the United States at the 1984 and 1998 Olympics, 1987 and 1991 Canada Cup, the 1989 Ice Hockey World Championships and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

Known for his community involvement off the ice, LaFontaine founded the Companions in Courage Foundation in 1997. LaFontaine has been recognized numerous times for his philanthropic work, receiving the Patriot Award (2000), International Humanitarian Award (2003), James Keller Award (2005), Humanitarian of the Year Award (2008) and the Jefferson Award (2012). In 2016, LaFontaine participated at the invitation of the Vatican and Pope Francis in Sport at the Service of Humanity: The First Global Conference on Faith & Sport. After retiring from playing, LaFontaine worked as an executive for the NHL, Islanders and Sabres and for MSG Network as an analyst for Rangers games.
