Joe Sakic played the center position in the NHL for 20 seasons from 1988-2009 and spent his entire career with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche. He played an integral role in the Avs winning two Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001 along with Hall of Fame teammates Patrick Roy and Peter Forsberg. He was the recipient of the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs in 1996 and won the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP in 2001. Sakic was selected to 13 All-Star Games and was named to the NHL First All-Star Team three times.
Sakic was one of the most productive offensive players in the NHL during his career, scoring 50 goals twice and recording at least 100 points six times. In 2006, Sakic became just the 11th player in NHL history to amass 1,500 points and the sixth to achieve the feat with a single franchise, joining an elite group that includes Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman and Ray Bourque. The Avalanche retired Sakic’s jersey #19 in 2009 and he became a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012 and Canada Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2017, he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players of all-time in celebration of the league’s 100th Anniversary.
In international play, Sakic represented Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics and helped the team to capture its first gold medal in hockey in 50 years. He was named MVP of the tournament. He also competed at the 1998 and 2006 Winter Games. After retiring, Sakic moved into Colorado’s front office beginning in 2011, working first as an alternate governor and executive advisor before being named the Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations in 2013.
