Ozzie Newsome is a former NFL tight end who spent his entire career from 1978-1990 playing for the Cleveland Browns. One of the top tight ends of his era, Newsome’s career 662 catches and 7,980 yards are Cleveland franchise bests. In 1978, Newsome caught 38 passes for 589 yards as a rookie, a performance that won him Browns’ Offensive Player of the Year honors. In 1981, 1984 and 1985, Newsom was named to the Pro Bowl. The 1981 campaign saw him establish a career-high in receiving yards with 1,002. Later in 1984, he had 1,001 yards of receiving to go along with 89 receptions, which tied a career-high he’d set the year prior in 1983. Newsome became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999 and was part of the inaugural class in 2010 that was inducted into the Browns Ring of Honor.
Newsome played college football at Alabama, where he was twice named All-SEC and was called by head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant the best end in school history. During his four seasons in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide compiled a 42-6 record. In 1994, Newsome was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Post college, he was a 1st round selection by Cleveland in the 1978 NFL Draft. After his playing days, Newsome enjoyed a lengthy career as a front office executive, eventually serving as general manager for the Baltimore Ravens from 2002-2018. The Ravens captured Super Bowl titles in 2001 (XXXV) and 2013 (XLVII) with him serving in that position.
