Willie McGee spent 18 seasons playing outfield in the majors from 1982-1999 and enjoyed most of his success with the St. Louis Cardinals, with whom he played from 1982-1990 and 1996-1999. He also played for the Oakland A’s (1990), San Francisco Giants (1991-1994) and Boston Red Sox (1995). The 1985 National League MVP, McGee was four times named an All-Star and was twice the league’s batting champion. He also won a Gold Glove Award three times and Silver Slugger Award once.
A member of the Cardinals Hall of Fame, McGee made his MLB debut on May 10, 1982 and played an integral role in the Cardinals’ winning the World Series later that season. In Game 3 of the Fall Classic, McGee belted two home runs and made a crucial catch in the 9th inning. At the time, he was only the third rookie in MLB history to hit two homers in a single World Series game. McGee was born on November 2, 1958 in San Francisco, California. After attending Diablo Valley Community College, McGee was picked in the 1st round of the 1977 draft by the New York Yankees and was traded to St. Louis in 1981. After retiring from playing, McGee worked in the Cardinals front office and as a coach.
