Carl Eller is a retired NFL defensive end who played from 1964-1979, mainly for the Minnesota Vikings. Selected by Minnesota in the first round of the 1964 NFL Draft, Eller was a member of the Vikings’ famed “Purple People Eater” defensive unit and helped the Vikings win 10 Central Division titles and the NFL Championship in 1969.

He is one of 11 Vikings to have played in all four of Minnesota’s Super Bowls. Eller played in six Pro Bowls during his career and was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1971. He had a career-high 15 sacks in 1969 and matched that mark again in 1977. Eller played the final year of his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks in 1979 before retiring. A member of the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team and the Vikings’ Ring of Honor, Eller was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

Eller attended the University of Minnesota, earning All-American honors as a junior and senior and helping the Gophers to a Rose Bowl win as a sophomore. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. Each year, the University of Minnesota presents the Carl Eller Award to the team's best defensive player. After retiring, Eller worked as a licensed drug and alcohol counselor and founded multiple substance-abuse clinics in Minnesota. He also worked for the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
