Carla Overbeck is a former soccer defender who most notably played on the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) from 1988-2000 and tallied 168 caps during her career. A 2006 inductee into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Overbeck appeared in 170 total games for the United States and was a longtime captain. She helped the U.S. to its first-ever victory at the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup and did not miss a single minute of action at the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 1996 Summer Olympics as well as the 1999 World Cup.
Overbeck won a gold medal with the USWNT at the 1996 Summer Olympics and also helped elevate the team to victory at the 1999 World Cup. Similarly, she won gold medals at the 1991, 1993, 1994 and 2000 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup.

Overbeck played soccer collegiately at North Carolina from 1986-1989, winning an NCAA Championship in every one of those seasons. Since 1992, she has served as an assistant coach for the Duke Blue Devils women’s soccer team. From 2001-2002, Overbeck played for the Carolina Courage of the Women’s United Soccer Association, the first women’s professional soccer league in the U.S. She became a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
