Elvin Hayes played in the NBA from 1968-1984, capturing an NBA championship in 1978. Hayes was an NBA All-Star for 12 straight years from 1969-1980 and led the NBA in scoring in 1969. He played collegiately at the University of Houston, where he led the Cougars in scoring in 1966, 1967 and 1968 and was a consensus two-time All-American. Hayes was selected as the first overall draft pick in both the NBA and ABA and chose to sign with the San Diego (later Houston) Rockets, for whom he played from 1968-1972.
Hayes was traded to the Baltimore Bullets (the team relocated to Washington in 1974) in 1972 and led them to three NBA Finals in 1975, 1978 and 1979; Washington's championship in 1978 remains the team’s only victory in the Finals. From 1981-84, Hayes played for the Rockets once more and retired having played an even 50,000 minutes in the NBA. He averaged a double-double of 21 points and 12.5 rebounds per game over the span of his career. Hayes finished his undergraduate degree at the University of Houston after retiring from the NBA and has worked as a radio analyst for Cougars men’s basketball games. His number has been retired by both the University of Houston and the Washington Wizards. He is a member of the both the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame and College Basketball Hall of Fame was also named to the NBA 50th Anniversary Team.
