Juwan Howard is a former NBA center/forward who was named head coach of the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team in 2019. In his first season as head coach of the Wolverines, Howard coached the team to a 19-12 finish, which included upsets of No. 6 North Carolina and No. 8 Gonzaga. Howard played college basketball at Michigan and received All-American honors for the 1993-1994 season. He was a key member of the ‘Fab Five’ recruiting class of 1991 along with Jalen Rose, Chris Weber, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson that took the team to consecutive NCAA title games in 1992 and 1993.
In the 1994 NBA Draft, Howard was the 5th overall selection by Washington and went on to enjoy a 19-year playing career for the Washington Bullets/Wizards (1994-2001), Dallas Mavericks (2001-2002, 2007-2008), Denver Nuggets (2002-2003, 2008), Orlando Magic (2003-2004), Houston Rockets (2004-2007), Charlotte Bobcats (2007-2008), Portland Trail Blazers (2009-2010) and Miami Heat (2010-2013). During his time with the Heat, Howard captured back-to-back NBA titles in 2012 and 2013.
Shortly after he wrapped-up his playing career, Howard stayed on with Miami as an assistant coach, serving from 2013-2019 until his return to Michigan. Howard has been an active philanthropist since his college days at Michigan. He often visited with patients at the University of Michigan Health System Hospitals and established the Juwan Howard Foundation to facilitate basketball activities for underprivileged children. He was born on February 7, 1973 in Chicago, Illinois.
