Fred McGriff, nicknamed “Crime Dog” by legendary ESPN sportscaster Chris Berman, is a retired MLB first baseman who played from 1986-2004 with the Toronto Blue Jays (1986-1990), San Diego Padres (1991-1993), Atlanta Braves (1993-1997), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (1998-2001, 2004), Chicago Cubs (2001-2002) and L.A. Dodgers (2003). He made his debut in the majors with Toronto on May 17, 1986. Known throughout his career for power at the plate, McGriff hit a total of 493 career home runs – which ties him all-time with the great Lou Gehrig - including 30 home runs in a season 10 times.
In 1989, he led the A.L. with 36 home runs and, in 1992, he led the N.L. in homers. McGriff was a five-time All-Star (1992, 1994-1996, 2000) and won Silver Slugger awards in 1989, 1992 and 1993. In 1994, McGriff won All-Star Game MVP honors and finished as runner-up in that year’s Home Run Derby. In 1995 with the Braves, McGriff hit 27 homers with 93 RBI as Atlanta advanced to the World Series and won thanks in part to McGriff’s two home runs during the Fall Classic. McGriff finished his career with a lifetime batting average of .284 along with 1,550 RBI and 2,490 hits.
