A successful running back in both college and the NFL, Herschel Walker won the 1982 Heisman Trophy while at the University of Georgia before enjoying a lengthy professional career from 1983-1997, first for the New Jersey Generals of the USFL (1983-1985) and later transitioning to the NFL, where he played for the Dallas Cowboys (1986-1989, 1996-1997), Minnesota Vikings (1989-1991), Philadelphia Eagles (1992-1994) and New York Giants (1995).
Considered one of the greatest college football players in history, Walker enjoyed a storied collegiate career with the Georgia Bulldogs. In 1980, 1981 and 1982, he was a consensus All-American and SEC Player of the Year. The 1980 season saw Walker lead the Bulldogs to a national title with a 17-10 win against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Despite separating a shoulder, Walker still managed 150 yards on the ground on 26 carries. During his Heisman Trophy campaign of 1982, Walker rushed for 1,752 yards while scoring 16 times. He was also the recipient of the Maxwell and Walter Camp awards. In total for his college career, Walker set 41 UGA, 11 NCAA and 16 SEC Conference football records.
Walker’s jersey #34 was retired by Georgia and, in 1999, he became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. In 2020, he was acknowledged by ESPN in a ceremony held during the CFP National Championship game that honored the top 11 college players of all-time in conjunction with college football’s 150th anniversary. He was named the second greatest college football player ever, trailing only Jim Brown and franked ahead of such greats as Dick Butkus, Roger Staubach, Barry Sanders, Red Grange, Bo Jackson, Jim Thorpe, Archie Griffin, Gale Sayers and Earl Campbell.
At the conclusion of his college career, Walker opted to play for the USFL’s New Jersey Generals for three seasons, where he was a two-time All-USFL selection and the 1985 league MVP. After moving to the NFL and Dallas Cowboys, Walker established himself as a force in the backfield, being named a second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 1987 and 1988. In the later season, he recorded a career-best 1,514 yards rushing while scoring five times along with 53 catches for 503 yards. After playing for Minnesota, Philadelphia and New York, Walker returned to Dallas before retiring after the 1997 season.
Aside from football, Walker has had various other athletic interests. In 1992, he competed for the United States in the sport of bobsledding at the 1992 Winter Olympics, finishing ninth. He also competed in two Mixed Martial Arts fights in 20010-2011, winning both times. In 2008, Walker wrote a book called “Breaking Free: My Life with Dissociative Disorder “, in which he discussed the challenges associated with having the disorder and how he learned to live with it.
