Hideki Matsui is a former outfielder who played from 2003-2012, primarily with the New York Yankees (2003-2009) and later the LA Angels (2010), Oakland Athletics (2011) and Tampa Bay Rays (2012). Matsui achieved superstar status playing in Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, where he was a nine-time All-Star (1994-2002) and three-time Japan Series champion (1994, 2000, 2002) with the Yomiuri Giants. He became a member of the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Upon joining MLB and the Yankees, Matsui made an immediate impact. In 2003, he finished second in the A.L. Rookie of the Year voting, hitting 16 home runs with 100 RBI while batting .287. He hit 31 homers with 108 RBI and a .298 batting average the next year, earning MVP votes, while earning back-to-back All-Star Game selections in 2003 and 2004.

Matsui won a World Series ring with the Yankees in 2009, a year in which he hit .274 with 28 home runs and 90 RBI. Off the baseball diamond, Matsui has been heavily involved in philanthropic and humanitarian efforts, donating half a million dollars to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami while contributing a further $620,000 in relief following the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit his home country of Japan.
