Joe Theismann played quarterback for the NFL’s Washington Redskins from 1974-1985, which included a victory in Super Bowl XVII to cap the 1982 season, the franchise’s first title in 40 years. In that game, Theismann threw 143 yards and two touchdowns in Washington’s 27-17 win over the Miami Dolphins. He is a member of the Redskins Ring of Fame and was named one of the 70 Greatest Redskins.
The Super Bowl season saw Theisman named to his first Pro Bowl and win the Bert Bell Award. He similarly was named the NFL Man of the Year in 1982, honoring his on-field prowess, character and community involvement. In 1983, Theismann had his finest NFL season, throwing for 3,714 yards and 29 scores. He made the Pro Bowl, earned first-team All-Pro accolades and was named NFL MVP. In total for his career in Washington, Theismann played in 163 straight games and is the all-time franchise leader in pass completions, attempts and yards passing.
Born on September 9, 1949 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Theismann played college football at Notre Dame, where he led the Fighting Irish to back-to-back Cotton Bowls, was named an All-American in 1970 and finished runner-up to Jim Plunkett of Stanford in that season’s Heisman Trophy voting. As a starter, Theismann’s overall record was 20-3-2. He became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. After college, Theismann was drafted by baseball’s Minnesota Twins and the Dolphins but opted instead to play in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts, where he spent three seasons from 1971-1973. In his first year, he led Toronto to a 10-4 record and spot in the Gray Cup, the CFL’s equivalent of the Super Bowl.
Theismann’s career was prematurely cut short when he suffered a gruesome injury during a 1985 Monday Night Football game versus the New York Giants. After his playing days ended, Theismann enjoyed a successful NFL broadcasting career with ESPN for nearly two decades. On the philanthropic front, he’s served as a member of the Sports Advisory Board of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He owns Theismann’s Restaurant and Bar in Alexandria, Virginia and is an acclaimed motivational speaker, sharing his wisdom to countless organizations.
