Kurt Warner overcame extraordinary odds to put together a Hall of Fame NFL career that spanned from 1998-2009 for the St. Louis Rams (1998-2003), New York Giants (2004) and Arizona Cardinals (2005-2009). Warner was twice named NFL MVP by the Associated Press in 1999 and 2001 and is the only undrafted player in league history to be so honored. A four-time Pro Bowl selection (1999-2001, 2004), Warner in 1999 threw 41 touchdowns and 4,353 yards, leading the Rams to a 23-16 victory in Super Bowl XXXIV over the Tennessee Titans. In the championship game, he went 24-of-45 with 414 yards and a pair of touchdowns, earning Super Bowl MVP honors. He became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017 and was inducted along with Morten Andersen, Kenny Easley, Terrell Davis, Jason Taylor, Jerry Jones and LaDainian Tomlinson. He was also inducted into the Cardinals’ Ring of Honor in 2014.
In three consecutive seasons, from 1999-2001, Warner led the NFL in completion percentage while in 1999 and 2001, he led the league in both passing touchdowns and passer rating. The 2001 season also saw him throw for a league-leading 4,830 yards. Later in his career in 2008, Warner led the underdog Arizona Cardinals to the franchise’s first title game appearance with a berth in Super Bowl XLIII, which they ultimately lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-23. That season, he was named the NEA NFL Most Valuable Player. That same year, Warner was recognized by the NFL for his generosity off the field when he was honored as the Walter Payton Man of the Year.
Born on June 22, 1971 in Burlington, Iowa, Warner went to Regis High School before playing college football at the University of Northern Iowa. Named the starter his senior season, Warner received Offensive Player of the Year accolades in the Gateway Conference. After going undrafted, Warner was invited to the Green Bay Packers training camp but was released prior to the start of the regular season. He famously worked at a Hy-Vee grocery store earning $5.50/hour before signing with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League. He went on to play two seasons for Iowa, where he was named first-team All-Arena in 1996 and 1997 and would eventually be inducted into the league’s Hall of Fame. After his time in the AFL, Warner signed with the Rams in 1998, where he was first sent to play for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe before joining the Rams roster.
After retiring from playing, Warner began working for the NFL Network in 2010 on such shows as NFL Total Access and the pregame show for Thursday Night Football. He also worked for Fox Sports and Westwood One on their coverage of the NFL. He has also served as a coach at Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. A devout Christian, Warner has authored two books where he discusses his career and faith, the first titled “Keep Your Head Up” followed by “All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football, and the First Miracle”.
