Lanny McDonald is a former NHL right winger who played in the league from 1973-1989 with the Toronto Maple Leafs (1973-1980), Colorado Rockies (1980-1982) and Calgary Flames (1982-1989). A 1992 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame, McDonald was co-captain of the Flames when they captured a Stanley Cup for the 1988-1989 season, which would turn out to be McDonald’s last before he retired. He is also a member of the Canada Sports Hall of Fame and Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

McDonald’s 66 goals scored for Calgary in 1982-1983 remain a franchise record and shortly after he retired, the Flames honored him by retiring his jersey #9 in 1990, the first player in team history to be so honored. During his career, McDonald led his respective team in scoring during six different seasons. In 1976-1977 and 1982-1983, McDonald was named an NHL second team All-Star. In 1982-1983, he was also honored with the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy, given to the NHL player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, perseverance and dedication to the sport.

A longtime supporter of the Special Olympics as well as other charities and philanthropic causes, McDonald was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 1987-1988 for his work in the community. In both 1987 and 1989, the Flames honored him with the Ralph T. Scurfield Humanitarian Award in recognition of his efforts.
