Mark May played in the NFL as an offensive lineman from 1981-1993, primarily with the Washington Redskins (1981-1989) and later the San Diego Chargers (1991) and Phoenix Cardinals (1992-1993). In 2002, May was named one of the 80 Greatest Redskins of all-time in celebration of the franchise’s 70th Anniversary. May was an important part of the Redskins’ offensive line unit known as “The Hogs” that featured the likes of Joe Jacoby, Russ Grimm and Jeff Bostic and helped propel Washington to two Super Bowl championships during his tenure with the team. In Super Bowl XVII, he helped Washington tailback John Riggins rush for 166 yards as the Redskins beat the Miami Dolphins 27-17. May was named to the Pro Bowl in 1988 as the Redskins that season benefited from May’s presence on the offensive line and culminated in a win in Super Bowl XXII, where tailback Timmy Smith ran for 204 yards in a 42-10 rout of Denver.
A standout at the University of Pittsburgh from 1977-1980, the Panthers went 39-8-1 with May on the team. He was a unanimous All-American in 1980 and also won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best offensive lineman for the season. Pittsburgh retired his jersey #73 and he became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005. After retiring, May worked as a football analyst for WTAE Radio in Pittsburgh, TNT, CBS Sports and ESPN where, among other duties, he worked for a decade alongside former Notre Dame head football coach Lou Holtz on its College Football Final show. Starting in 2018, May continued his work with Holtz as they analyzed college football games for “The Crowd’s Line”.
