Mercury Morris is a former NFL running back who played from 1969-1976, primarily with the Miami Dolphins (1969-1975) and later the San Diego Chargers (1976). Morris was named to the Pro Bowl three straight seasons from 1971-1973, during which time he helped the Dolphins to back-to-back Super Bowl victories (VII and VIII) in 1972 and 1973.
Leading up to 1972, Morris enjoyed a dual role with the Dolphins as running back as well as kick returner. During Miami’s Super Bowl VII run, he assumed more of a running back role, rushing for 1,000 yards on 190 carries while scoring 12 touchdowns, which led the NFL. Combined with teammate Larry Csonka’s 1,117 rushing yards, they became the first duo in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in one season. That year, the Dolphins produced the NFL’s first (and still only) perfect season, culminating in a Super Bowl win over the Washington Redskins, 14-7.
Morris had another solid campaign in 1973, rushing 149 times for 954 yards. His 6.4 yards per carry average was the best in the league while Morris’ 10 rushing touchdowns was third-best. That season saw the Dolphins win their second consecutive Super Bowl when they beat the Minnesota Vikings, 24-7. In 1975, Morris’ final season with Miami, he ran for 875 yards and scored four touchdowns. He went on to play one more season in the NFL with the Chargers before retiring after the 1976 campaign. At the time of his retirement, he trailed only Jim Brown all-time in average yards per carry. Morris attended college at West Texas State and was a two-time All-American in 1967 and 1968. The Dolphins selected him in the 3rd round of the 1969 draft.
