One of the most accomplished women’s golfers in history, Nancy Lopez won 48 tournaments, including three Women’s PGA Championships in 1978, 1985 and 1989. Lopez received many accolades during her career and in 1978 and 1985, was named Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press. Similarly, she earned LPGA Player of the Year honors four times and was the tour’s leading money winner three times. In 1987, Lopez became a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and that same year was the recipient of the LPGA Tour’s William and Mousie Powell Award. In 2002, Lopez became an inductee into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
In her first full year on tour in 1978, Lopez recorded her first professional victory at the Bent Tree Classic and would go on to win nine events, including her first PGA Championship. As the LPGA Tour’s leading money winner that year, she was named Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and was the Vare Trophy winner for the tour’s lowest scoring average. Lopez is the only women’s golfer to ever win all three honors in one season. Lopez’s final tournament victory came at the age of 40 in 1997 when she won the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship. In international play, Lopez represented the United States at the Solheim Cup, first as a player in 1990 and later as captain in 2005.
