Shawn Kemp played forward/center in the NBA for 14 seasons from 1989-2003 with the Seattle SuperSonics (1989-1997), Cleveland Cavaliers (1997-2000), Portland Trail Blazers (2000-2002) and Orlando Magic (2002-2003). Kemp averaged 14.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game during his career and was named an All-Star in six consecutive seasons from 1993-1998. During the period of 1994-1996, Kemp was also named All-NBA Second-Team in three straight years.
After starting just a single game for Seattle in 1989-1990 with a per game average of 6.5 points, Kemp started 66 contests for the SuperSonics the next season and contributed 15 points per game in 1990-1991. In 1995-1996, he set a career-high in rebounds per game with 11.4. That season, Seattle advanced to its first NBA Finals behind the play of Kemp and future Hall of Famer Gary Payton before being defeated by Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. In the Finals, Kemp averaged an impressive 23.3 points per game and was the runner-up to Jordan for MVP.
Born on November 26, 1969 in Elkhart, Indiana, Kemp attended Elkhart High School, where he was a Parade first-team All-American and McDonald’s All-American in 1988. After his playing days, Kemp owned Oskar’s Kitchen along with a share of Amber’s Kitchen in Seattle.
