Shawon Dunston is a retired MLB shortstop whose career spanned from 1985-2002, primarily with the Chicago Cubs (1985-1995, 1997) and later the San Francisco Giants (1996, 1998), Pittsburgh Pirates (1997), Cleveland Indians (1998), St. Louis Cardinals (1999), New York Mets (1999) and Giants again (2001-2002). Dunston was picked first overall by the Cubs in the 1982 draft out of high school and made his MLB debut on April 9, 1985. Dunston was a career .269 hitter and recorded 1,597 hits and 150 home runs.
After appearing in 150 games with Chicago during his sophomore season in 1986 when he hit 17 home runs and knocked in 68 batters, Dunston’s 1987 season was cut short due to injury but he bounced right back in 1988 and promptly earned his first trip to the All-Star Game, recording 30 stolen bases and 56 RBI for the season. In 1990, he batted .262 with 17 homers and 66 RBI with the Cubs, earning his second All-Star appearance. Dunston recorded one of his most solid campaigns in 1995, hitting .296 with 14 home runs and a career-high 69 RBI. In 2002, Dunston and San Francisco advanced to the World Series, where, despite his home run hit in Game Six, the Giants fell to the Anaheim Angels, 4-3. After his playing career ended, Dunston joined the Giants as a special assistant.
