Tom Glavine pitched in the majors from 1987-2008, primarily with the Atlanta Braves (1987-2002, 2008) but also the New York Mets (2003-2007). In 2014, Glavine was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot. He is also a member of the Braves Hall of Fame and had his jersey #47 retired by Atlanta in 2010. A 10-time All-Star and 20-game winner five times, Glavine was an integral part of the Braves’ pitching staff that consisted of fellow Hall of Famers John Smoltz and Greg Maddux that won the 1995 World Series. Glavine that season went 16-7 with a 3.08 ERA and was crowned World Series MVP.
In three straight seasons from 1991-1993, Glavine led Major League Baseball in wins and did so again in 1998 and 2000. He went 20-11 with a 2.55 ERA in 1991 and won the first of his two N.L. Cy Young Awards. In 1998, he won his second N.L. Cy Young Award, posting a 20-6 record along with an ERA of 2.47 and 157 strikeouts. Glavine was also an accomplished hitter as evidenced by the four Silver Slugger Awards he won in 1991, 1995, 1996 and 1998. In total, Glavine’s career numbers included a 305-203 record, ERA of 3.54 and 2,607 strikeouts. He is just one of six lefties - and 24 pitchers overall - in MLB history to win 300 games.
Glavine was born on March 25, 1966 in Concord, Massachusetts and lettered in high school in both baseball and ice hockey. In 1984, he was drafted by both the Braves in the 2nd round of the MLB draft and Los Angeles Kings in the 4th round of the NHL Draft. Glavine’s community involvement has included working with Volunteers of America on its “Operation Backpack” program, which supplies children with school supplies. Glavine released a wine in 2008 called “Cabernet Glavington” with proceeds benefitting the non-profit CURE Childhood Cancer. He also has supported the Georgia Transplant Foundation.
