Tom Thayer played in the NFL as an offensive guard from 1985-1993, most notably with the Chicago Bears (1985-1992) but also the Miami Dolphins (1993). Upon joining the Bears, Thayer quickly found success as he solidified himself as a starter on the offensive line for a Bears team that was coached by Mike Ditka and featured future Hall of Famers Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, Jim Covert and Dan Hampton. That team produced a dominating 15-1 regular season record and cruised through the playoffs in route to a 46-10 victory over New England in Super Bowl XX. Thayer started a total of 130 games for the Bears over his eight seasons with the team and has been named one of the 100 Greatest Bears of All-Time.
Before his NFL career, Thayer spent three seasons playing in the United States Football League with the Chicago Blitz (1983), Arizona Wranglers (1984) and Arizona Outlaws (1985). Thayer played in the 1984 USFL Championship Game with the Wranglers before joining the Bears in 1985. He played college football at Notre Dame and was a 4th round pick by the Bears in the 1983 NFL Draft, although he opted to sign with the USFL’s Chicago Blitz instead. After his playing days, Thayer began a career in broadcasting, hosting multiple radio shows in the Chicago area before becoming a Bears radio analyst in the late 1990s. Thayer’s high school, Joliet Catholic, inducted him into its Academy Hall of Champions in 2014. He is also a member of the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.
