Jason Kendall spent 15 seasons catching in the majors from 1996-2010 for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1996-2004), Oakland A’s (2005-2007), Chicago Cubs (2007), Milwaukee Brewers (2008-2009) and Kansas City Royals. Kendall, who caught more games behind the plate than any catcher in Pirates history, enjoyed much of his success during his time in Pittsburgh, where he named by The Sporting News as the National League Rookie of the Year and went on to be a three-time All-Star in 1996, 1998 and 2000. On May 19, 2000, Kendall hit for the cycle in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals and, in so doing, became the first player in Pittsburgh history to achieve the feat at Three Rivers Stadium. In total for his career, Kendall recorded a batting average of .288 with 2,195 hits and 744 RBI.
Born on June 26, 1974 in San Diego, California, Kendall attended Torrance High School, where he tied the national baseball high school mark of recording a hit in 43 consecutive games. He was picked by the Pirates in the 1992 MLB Draft (1st round) and made his debut in the majors on April 1, 1996. Kendall is the son of retired MLB catcher Fred Kendall. In 2014, Kendall authored the book “Throwback: A Big-League Catcher Tells How the Game Is Really Played”.
