Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway is the current head basketball coach at the University of Memphis and a former NBA guard who played from 1993-2007. A standout while at Memphis from 1991-93, Hardaway was named back-to-back Great Midwest Conference (later Conference USA) Player of the Year and a first-team All-American as a junior. Selected as the third overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft, Hardaway played from 1993-99 for the Orlando Magic, never averaging less than 15.8 points per game in that span while earning four straight All-Star selections from 1995-98. He also won NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 1994 and won a gold medal with Team USA at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Hardaway played for the Phoenix Suns from 1999-2004, averaging 12.4 points in 236 games. Hardaway played two seasons for the New York Knicks in 2005-06 and finished his NBA career with the Miami Heat in 2007. He retired with a 15.2 points per game average and was a known impact performer in the playoffs; in the eight seasons that he participated in the postseason, Hardaway averaged 20.4 points per game. Hardaway coached high school basketball in Memphis before being named head coach of his alma mater in 2018.
