Vince Carter enjoyed a long and successful career in the National Basketball Association. During a NBA-record 22-year career that spanned four decades from 1998-2020, Carter played with the Toronto Raptors (1998-2004), Brooklyn Nets (2004-2009), Orlando Magic (2009-2010), Phoenix Suns (2010-2011), Dallas Mavericks (2011-2014), Memphis Grizzlies (2014-2017), Sacramento Kings (2017-2018) and Atlanta Hawks (2018-2020). Carter was named an NBA All-Star in eight consecutive seasons from 2000-2007 along with All-NBA Third Team honors in 2000 and All-NBA Second Team accolades in 2001. In international play, Carter won a gold medal representing the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Carter retired as both Toronto and New Jersey’s franchise leader in points scored in a single season while between the two teams, he set a total of 15 all-time franchise records. Carter is one of just six players in the history of the NBA to amass 24,000 points, 2,500 assists, 6,000 rebounds, 1,000 three-pointers and 1,000 steals. As a rookie with Toronto in 1998-1999, Carter amassed a per game average of 18.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in route to winning NBA Rookie of the Year honors as well as being named by The Sporting News as its Rookie of the Year. Carter set a career-high in points per game with 27.6 for the 2000-2001 campaign and, between 1999 and 2009, never averaged less than 20.6 points during a single season.
Born on January 26, 1977 in Daytona Beach, Florida, Carter played collegiately at the University of North Carolina from 1995-1998. He helped lead the Tar Heels to two ACC Tournament titles and two appearances in the NCAA Final Four. His jersey #15 was honored by the Tar Heels, joining such other school greats as Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Kenny Smith, Eric Montross, Antawn Jamison and J.R. Reid. Well-known for his philanthropic efforts, Carter established the Embassy of Hope Foundation, which provides assistance to families and children in Ontario, Florida and New Jersey. In 2007, Carter was recognized for his community work in his home state of Florida when he received the Points of Light Award. After retiring in 2020, Carter was hired by ESPN as an NBA analyst.
