Bernie Parent played goalie in the NHL for 13 seasons from 1965-1979, primarily with the Philadelphia Flyers (1967-1971, 1973-1979) but also the Boston Bruins (1965-1967) and Toronto Maple Leafs (1970-1972). Considered one of the greatest players to ever play the position, Parent became a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984. He was voted as one of the Top 100 NHL Players of All-Time by The Hockey News in 1998 and named by the NHL one of the 100 Greatest Players in league history in 2017. A five-time All-Star (1969, 1970, 1974, 1975, 1977), Parent was additionally named to the NHL First All-Star Team in 1974 and 1975. Philadelphia retired Parent’s jersey #1 in 1979 and he also a member of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.
A critical member of the Flyers teams that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975, Parent enjoyed highly successful campaigns during both championship seasons. He led the NHL in wins both seasons while his 47 wins in 1973-1974 was an NHL record until the mark was broken by Martin Brodeur in 2006-2007. Parent’s 24 regular season shutouts, - 30 including the postseason - also was an NHL-best during that period. Parent led the league in goals against average in both seasons, winning the Vezina Trophy twice as the NHL’s premiere goaltender Additionally, Parent captured consecutive Conn Smythe Trophies as the league’s playoffs MVP during Philadelphia’s two straight Stanley Cup runs. After his playing days, Parent continued to work with the Flyers as a goaltending coach and later team ambassador.
