Carl Banks played linebacker in the NFL from 1984-1995, primarily with the New York Giants (1984-1992) and later the Washington Redskins (1993) and Cleveland Browns (1994-1995). Banks was part of the legendary Giants defense of the 1980s known as the “Big Blue Wrecking Crew” which included the likes of future Hall of Famers Harry Carson and Lawrence Taylor. With the Giants, Banks helped the team to victory in Super Bowls XXI and XXV. He is a member of both the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team and the Giants Ring of Honor.
During the 1986 regular season, Banks had 113 tackles and 6.5 sacks. He produced a memorable performance during Super Bowl XXI, notching a total of 14 tackles as New York defeated the Denver Broncos, 39-20. In 1987, Banks earned a trip to the Pro Bowl and was also named All-Pro, setting career-highs in sacks (9.0) while also eclipsing 100 tackles for the second straight year as he finished with 101. During his lone season with the Redskins in 1993, Banks ended the year with his third 100-tackle campaign, registering 102 tackles, the most he’d recorded since 1987. For his career, Banks recorded in total 39.5 sacks.
After finishing his playing career with the Browns, Banks became a part-owner of the AFL’s New Jersey Red Dogs. He has also worked for Sirius NFL Radio in addition to a commentator on the radio broadcast of Giants games. Born on August 29, 1962 in Flint, Michigan, Banks played football collegiately at Michigan State before being picked by the Giants in the 1st round (3rd overall) in the 1984 NFL draft.
