Danny Manning enjoyed a celebrated college basketball career at the University of Kansas before embarking on a 15-year NBA career. During his time in college from 1984-1988. Manning was a two-time consensus first-team All-American and three-time Big Eight Player of the Year. In 1988, Manning helped the Jayhawks to an NCAA national championship and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. That season, he was considered the top college player in the country as evidenced by him winning the John R. Wooden Award and being named the NABC Player of the Year and Naismith College Player of the Year. Manning finished his career as the Big Eight’s all-time leading scorer as well as KU’s all-time leading rebounder and scorer. The school retired his jersey #25 in 1992 and he became a member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
After his success at Kansas, Manning represented the U.S. at the 1988 Summer Olympics, where he won a bronze medal. That same year, he was picked by the Los Angeles Clippers in the NBA Draft (1st overall pick). He went on to play for the Clippers (1988-1994), Atlanta Hawks (1994), Phoenix Suns (1994-1999), Milwaukee Bucks (1999-2000), Dallas Mavericks (2001-2002) and Detroit Pistons (2003). Manning was twice named an NBA-All-Star and in 1998 was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year. After retiring from playing, Manning went into coaching, first serving as an assistant at KU under head coach Bill Self before being hired in 2012 as the head coach at Tulsa, where he spent two seasons and helped lead the Hurricanes to a C-USA regular season and tournament title in 2014. For his efforts, Manning was named C-USA Coach of the Year. Manning moved east to Wake Forest after the 2013-2014 season, spending six seasons coaching the Demon Deacons through 2020.
