Considered one of the greatest goalies in NHL history, Patrick Roy enjoyed an illustrious 19-year career that spanned from 1985-2003 for the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. Roy won four Stanley Cups – two with each franchise – and was the recipient of the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP three times, the most ever by a goalie. He was also a three-time recipient of the Vezina Trophy, which recognizes the NHL’s best goalie, a four-time First-Team All-Star and 11 times participated in the NHL All-Star Game. Roy holds numerous all-time NHL records by a goalie, including playoff games (247) and playoff wins (151). He was also the first goalie in league history to play in 1,000 games and win 500 games (he retired as the league’s all-time winningest goalie with 551).
Roy’s jersey #33 was retired by both Colorado and Montreal and he became a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006. In celebration of the NHL’s 100th Year Anniversary, in 2017 Roy was named as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players of all-time. Born on October 5, 1965 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, Roy was picked my Montreal in the 1984 NHL Draft (3rd round). He made his debut in the NHL on February 23, 1985. After retiring from playing, Roy served as vice president of hockey operations and head coach of Colorado and head coach and general manager of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Quebec Ramparts.
