Lem Barney is a retired NFL defensive back who played for the Detroit Lions in a career lasting from 1967-1977. A seven-time Pro Bowler in 1967-1969, 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1976, Barney also earned two first-team All-Pro selections in 1967 and 1968. Barney came into the NFL after being chosen out of Jackson State by Detroit in the 1967 NFL Draft and started all 14 games at cornerback in his first season, leading the NFL with 10 picks en route to being selected as the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Over the course of his career, Barney had 56 interceptions.

He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992 and is also a member of Jackson State, the Detroit Lions and the states of Michigan and Mississippi’s athletic hall of fames. In 1997, the Detroit Free Press ranked Barney as the best cornerback in NFL history while in 1999, The Sporting News ranked him as one of the greatest 100 football players in league history. His number was retired by the Lions in 2004. Outside of football, Barney has worked as a broadcaster for BET and the Lions, calling preseason games. He also famously sang background vocals on his friend Marvin Gaye’s 1971 hit, “What’s Going On.”
