He also played for the Washington Bullets (1980-1985), Philadelphia 76ers (1989-1991, 1998-1999) and New Jersey Nets (1992-1996). After being picked by Washington in the 2nd round of the 1980 NBA Draft and used in reserve as a rookie, Mahorn started 80 games in the 1981-1982 season and recorded career highs in points per game (12.2) and assists per game (1.9). He joined the Pistons in 1985 and played an important role in the success of the legendary “Bad Boys” that included the likes of Dennis Rodman, Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, John Salley and Bill Laimbeer. In 1989, Mahorn and the Pistons won an NBA title by sweeping Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers, 4-0. After his playing days, Mahorn turned to coaching and served as an assistant with the WNBA’s Detroit Shock from 2005-2009, during which time the team won two WNBA titles. He also served as head coach for most of the 2009 season, replacing his former Pistons teammate Laimbeer.
