One of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, Steve Largent played his entire pro career from 1976-1989 with the Seattle Seahawks. Largent finished his career having amassed 819 receptions, 13,089 receiving yards and 100 touchdowns, all NFL records at the time of his retirement. In 1995, he became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Largent is also part of the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team and NFL 1980s All-Decade Team.
Born on September 28, 1954 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Largent played college football at the University of Tulsa before being picked in the 4thround by the Houston Oilers of the 1976 NFL Draft and subsequently traded to the Seahawks before the start of that year’s regular season. In 1979 and 1985, Largent led the NFL in receiving yards and, during his career, was named a Pro Bowler seven times (1978, 1979, 1981, 1984-1987) and second-team All-Pro four times (1978, 1979, 1984 and 1987). From 1978-1986 he recorded at least 1,064 yards of receiving in every campaign but one. The Seahawks retired his jersey #80 in 1992, making Largent the first such player to be so honored.
Known for his community presence and philanthropic efforts, Largent in 1988 was named the NFL Man of the Year and, in 1989, won the Bart Starr Award, which saluted his leadership on and off the football field. Each year, the Seahawks give out the Steve Largent Award, which is presented to a player for his dedication, spirit and integrity. Past winners have included such Seahawks greats as Russell Wilson, Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman and Mack Strong. After his playing days, Largent enjoyed a successful political career, serving the 1stDistrict of Oklahoma in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1994-2002.
