Steve Nash enjoyed an 18-year career NBA career as a point guard from 1996-2014 with the Phoenix Suns (1996-1998, 2004-2012), Dallas Mavericks (1998-2004) and Los Angeles Lakers (2012-2014). He became a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. Nash was twice named NBA MVP with the Suns in 2005 and 2008, joining Stephen Curry and Magic Johnson as the only points guard in league history to win the award more than once. At the time of his retirement, Nash ranked third all-time in league history behind only John Stockton and Jason Kidd with 10,335 assists.
Nash recorded a per game average of 14.3 points and 8.5 assists during his career, earning eight trips to the NBA All-Star Game. Five times he led the NBA in assists and was named All-NBA First-Team in three consecutive seasons from 2005-2007. In four separate years Nash produced a 50-40-90 season — that is, shooting at least 50% from the floor, 40% from three-point range and 90% from the free throw line. Only eight NBA players in total have accomplished the feat and Nash holds the record for the most times. He was three times honored with the Lionel Conacher Award (2002, 2005, 2006) as the top male Canadian athlete. In 2016, Nash received the Order of Canada, the countries highest civilian honor.
Nash was born on February 7, 1974 in Johannesburg, South Africa and grew up in Victoria, British Columbia. He played college basketball at Santa Clara, where he was twice named WWC Conference Player of the Year and finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in assists and free throw percentage. He became the first person in Santa Clara school history to have his number retired, an honor that was bestowed upon him in 2006. Off the court, Nash was known for his philanthropic work – he established the Steve Nash Foundation in 2001 and has sponsored the Steve Nash Youth Basketball League in his hometown province of British Columbia. After his retirement in 2015, Nash worked as a consultant for the Golden State Warriors. In 2020, he was named the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.
