Cliff Avril is a retired NFL defensive end whose career spanned 10 years with the Detroit Lions (2008-2012) and Seattle Seahawks (2013-2017). In his first season with Seattle, he played an integral role defensively in helping the Seahawks to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory over the Denver Broncos. In the game, he recovered a loose ball in the Broncos end zone for a touchdown while during the regular season, he recorded eight sacks.
Avril was named to the Pro Bowl in 2016 behind an 11.5 sack campaign, a career-high, in which he also registered five forced fumbles. By winning a title with Seattle in 2013, Avril became the first player in league history to win a Super Bowl title the year after being on a team that posted a 0-16 record, which the Lions did in 2012. From his rookie season with the Lions in 2008 through 2011, Avril increased his sack totals every season, culminating in a then-career-best 11 for the 2011 season. Avril retired in 2018 and in total for his career, compiled 299 tackles, 74 sacks and seven fumble recoveries in 140 games played.
Avril was drafted in 2008 in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft out of Purdue, where he earned second-team All-Big 10 honors the year prior. Avril was born on April 8, 1986 in Jacksonville, Florida and went to Clay High School, where he excelled in football, weightlifting, track and basketball and was named all-state in football and basketball.
