Marty Lyons played 11 seasons for the New York Jets at both defensive tackle and defensive end. He was a key member of the “New York Sack Exchange” with teammates Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko and Abdul Salaam. In 1981, Lyons helped lead the Jets to a franchise-record 66 sacks and the team’s first playoff appearance since 1969. The “New York Sack Exchange” led the NFL in sacks in 1981, 1983 and 1984. Lyons ended his career with 43 sacks, a record for a Jets defensive lineman. He was a Pro Bowl alternate in 1982 and 1983 and, in 2013, was inducted into the Jets Ring of Honor.

Lyons played collegiately for Paul “Bear” Bryant at the University of Alabama where he earned All-American honors in 1978. That same year his teammates elected him captain of the National Champion team. In recognition of his achievements, Lyons was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Lyons is also known for his extensive charitable work. In 1984, he was named NFL Man of the Year. As a tribute to his charitable ways, the Jets annually present the Marty Lyons Award to the player who gives back to his community the most. Lyons currently serves as analyst for the Jets Radio Network.
