Matt Carpenter is an MLB infielder who has spent the majority of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals from 2011-2021 and 2024-present. He also spent time with the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres. Carpenter won a World Series ring with the Cardinals in 2011 and helped lead the team to the 2013 World Series before they were defeated by the Boston Red Sox.
After a solid rookie campaign in 2012 that saw him place sixth in that year’s Rookie of the Year voting, Carpenter burst onto the baseball scene in 2013, leading the league in runs (126), hits (1999) and doubles (55). That season, he batted .311 with 11 home runs and 78 RBI, earning a trip to the All-Star Game and a Silver Slugger Award. He went on to finish fourth in the N.L. MVP voting for 2013.
Carpenter was again named an All-Star the next year in 2014. As St. Louis’ leadoff hitter, he led the National League in both plate appearances (709) and walks (95), finishing the season with eight home runs, 59 RBI and a .272 batting average. In 2015, Carpenter established himself as a batter with considerable power, evidenced by his then-career-best 28 home runs, a total that was more than his first four seasons in the majors combined. After hitting 20-plus home runs in both 2016 and 2017, Carpenter notched 36 in 2018, setting a new personal record, to go along with 81 RBI and a .272 batting average. He placed ninth in that year’s N.L. MVP voting.
