Pat Williams spent more than 50 years as an executive in the NBA and over 30 years in the front office of the Orlando Magic before announcing his retirement in 2019. Williams got his start in the NBA in 1968 as the Philadelphia 76ers business manager. He was named to his first general manager when he was hired by the Chicago Bulls at 27 years old. He would continue to serve in that capacity for 27 years for the Bulls, Atlanta Hawks, 76ers and Magic until 1996 until he was named the Magic’s executive vice president. In total during his career, Williams saw 23 of his teams make the NBA playoffs and five reach the NBA Finals. Williams was honored for his achievements in 2012 when he was the recipient of the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, which is annually given by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Williams attended Wake Forest on a baseball scholarship, where he was a three-year letterman and is a member of the school’s Sports Hall of Fame. He spent a couple seasons playing minor league baseball before he moved to the front office as the business manager for the Class A Miami Marlins in 1964. Williams was named gm of the Spartanburg Phillies in 1965 and president of the team in 1967. That year, he was named by the Sporting News as Minor League Executive of the Year. Williams has authored over 100 books and is an accomplished motivational speaker on the subjects of leadership, teamwork, customer service and peak performance.
